He helped his wife to get her degree, certification, and open a business in cosmetology. He assisted his second wife and family to become naturalized citizens. Gilbert raised his first three children surrounded by a childhood of activity of sports, school projects, hunting, and swimming and higher education opportunities. that constructed homes throughout the county until 2004 as well as remodeled the San Miguel Catholic Church and parish hall when it burned in the1980's. All the while he was a farmer growing chile, cotton, and corn on his farm in San Miguel and heading a family-led construction business GC Inc. He started his professional career in Federal Service as a postal rural carrier in San Miguel/La Mesa in his early 20's and became post master in La Mesa in 1980 until 1992. He was in the Navy Reserves during the Korean War and attended NMSU for two years. Gilbert was a basketball star at Las Cruces High School for his cousin and coach Rudy Camuñez and was active in student council and year book editor. Recently, while in the hospital, he recreated the 1949 businesses on Main Street from Las Cruces to Lohman Avenues showing where he jumped the parking lot meters, played pool, and shined shoes to help the family with finances. Growing up in the Mesquite Street Neighborhood and Downtown Las Cruces where he enjoyed Main Street. He was born Octoto Bernardo Camuñez and Cecilia Fitch Camuñez. Gilbert loved his wife, family, hunting, and basketball. He lived a full life that included sports, a professional work life of Federal Service and small business, farming, and volunteer public service to his community and church.

GILBERT CAMUñEZ, age 82, of Las Cruces, passed from this life on Monday, Jat 10:30 am at his home surrounded by his beloved wife and his children.
